Mohamed Salah Linked With AS Roma Return: What We Know So Far
By Nego World Sports
The football world is buzzing as reports suggest that Mohamed Salah could be considering a return to AS Roma as early as the January 2026 transfer window or the following summer. The Egyptian “King” finds himself at a crossroads in his career, and Italian media, including La Repubblica, indicate that the Giallorossi are exploring a potential reunion.
Why Roma Might Be Interested in Salah Again
AS Roma’s reported interest in re-signing Salah appears to be driven by the tactical vision of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who joined the club in summer 2025 after a successful stint at Atalanta. Gasperini has shaped Roma into a high-pressing, attacking team currently sitting 4th in Serie A.
Salah, who played for Roma between 2015 and 2017, is already a fan favorite at the Stadio Olimpico. His experience and goal-scoring ability could provide the “X-factor” for Gasperini’s system. In addition, he could act as a mentor for younger talents like Matías Soulé and Evan Ferguson.
Potential Tactical Role
Under Gasperini, Roma often uses a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formation. If the move happens, Salah might feature as a right-sided attacking midfielder or wide forward. His ability to cut inside from the right onto his left foot remains his biggest asset.
Some reports also suggest he could play as a secondary striker, which would allow him to focus on goal-scoring while reducing defensive duties—a move that could prolong his career at the top level.
Why a Move Might Happen
Salah’s reported tension with Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has been widely discussed in the media. While the relationship appeared positive early in 2025, some sources indicate that disagreements over playing time and squad rotation contributed to a less ideal environment for Salah at Anfield.
It is important to note that neither Liverpool nor AS Roma have made official statements regarding a transfer.
Salah’s Liverpool Legacy
Since joining Liverpool in July 2017 from Roma for a reported fee of £34 million, Salah has been central to the club’s success:
Goals: Over 250 goals scored
Assists: More than 115 assists
Trophies: Premier League (2020, 2025), UEFA Champions League (2019), FA Cup (2022), FIFA Club World Cup (2019), and two EFL Cups.
The Road Ahead
While Saudi clubs are reportedly interested in Salah, the idea of returning to Roma and working under Gasperini is generating media speculation. Some outlets suggest that a short-term loan could be possible in January 2026, though nothing has been confirmed.
As Salah participates in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, further discussions between his representatives and clubs are expected.
